How do I become an exchange student at the University of Lower Silesia?

Does my home university have an exchange program with ULS?

ULS has signed bilateral agreements with many European universities as well as several American institutions. Please see our list of partner institutions to see if your school is among them.

What is the SOCRATES/ERASMUS program?

ERASMUS (European Community Action Scheme for the Mobility of University Students) is a European Commission programme that facilitates the mobility of university students and faculty in many European countries, including European Union member states, European Economic Area countries and EU candidate countries.

How do I transfer credits I earn at ULS to my home university?

The European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) allows students transfer credits earned at ULS back to their home institutions.

I am a student from outside the European Union. How can I study at ULS?

ULS has agreements with universities in several non-EU countries. Please check our list of partner institutions to see if yours is among them.

I am an American student. How can I study at ULS?

ULS has cooperated with several universities in the United States, including Tennessee Technical University and the State University of New York, Brockport, with which we have a joint B.A. degree. American students from other universities may also attend our summer course, Experiencing the New Europe , and earn credits through our US partners.

What is the difference between a first cycle degree and a bachelor's degree?

'First cycle' (and analogously 'second cycle') are the terms adopted in the Bologna Process, which harmonises such aspects of the educational system as grades, credits, degree standards across Europe. First-cycle degrees are similar to Bachelor's degrees, and last three years, while second-cycle degrees are similar to Master's degrees.

I am a professor interested in teaching in Poland. Can I come to ULS to teach?

ULS welcomes professors through the ERASMUS programme for one- or two-week teaching stays. We also host professors for shorter stays to give lectures or seminars. Please also inquire at your institution's international office. You may also want to consult Wrocław's Regional Mobility Information Centre, which offers assistance to all foreign scholars who come to the area.

Can I earn a degree at ULS?

Students from the State University of New York, Brockport, may earn B.A.'s at ULS through our dual degree program. Students proficient in Polish may matriculate at ULS and earn degrees through our regular programmes of study.

What are your programmes of study?

ULS has two faculties: Education, and Social Sciences and Media Studies. Within these faculties, we have departments of Education, Special Education, International Relations, Journalism and Communications, Philosophy, Cultural Studies and Cultural Anthropology.

When does the semester start and end at ULS?

The fall semester will start 2 October 2006 and finish 2 February 2007. Students coming to ULS in the Fall are recommended to arrive in Wrocław by 29 September. Orientation will take place 2-3 October. Spring semester will start 12 February 2007 and finish on 23 June 2007.

What is the application deadline for ERAMUS students?

The application deadline for Fall semester is August 31. The application deadline for Spring semester is 30 November 2006.

What courses does ULS offer for foreign students?

ULS offers courses in English depending on student demand. Please see our list of English-language courses. We encourage you to contact our EU Programmes Coordinator, Jadwiga Dobrowolska-Drycz, to discuss the possibilities for seminars tailored to specific groups of ERASMUS students.

What languages does ULS offer courses in?

We offer courses in Polish and English.

Can I study the Polish language while attending ULS?

Yes. The University has a School of Polish Language, which offers Polish classes to students at all levels of proficiency. Students may also study Polish either through courses that ULS arranges in conjunction with the University of Wrocław, or through tandem language exchange with local Polish students.

I am a student of the Polish language. Can I attend ULS courses in Polish?

Yes. Students proficient in Polish may take Polish-language classes, or even enroll in our degree programmes.

Does ULS have summer programs for university credit?

Yes. Through the International Institute for the Study of Culture and Education, we offer a summer institute, Experiencing the New Europe, in which European and American students can earn credits.

Where can I find sources of funding for my stay at ULS?

The SOCRATES/ERASMUS programme offers fellowships to individual students for their study exchanges. You may also want to check with the Polish Embassy in your home country to see whether they offer fellowships for students coming to Poland to study. Please also inquire at your home institution's international office.

How much will my living expenses be during my stay in Wrocław?

Living expenses will run between 200 and 250 Euros a month, and housing will costs between 100 and 150 Euros.

How do I arrange for housing during my stay in Wrocław?

The EU Programmes Coordinator assists students in finding housing in Wrocław.

What is the best way to travel to Wrocław?

Wrocław is served by many train and bus lines, and also by an airport with daily flights to many European cities.

Do I need a visa and how do I arrange a visa for my stay in Poland?

Visa requirements for Poland vary by country, and you should check at your closest Polish embassy or consulate to establish whether you need a visa to study here. Even if you come from a country for which Poland waives the visa requirement, you must obtain a visa to stay longer than three months. This includes students from European Union countries. American students who plan to stay in Poland for more than three months should contact the Polish Embassy in Washington regarding visas.
